Q & A with Marcel Hoornsman

Marcel Hoornsman from Dronten in the Netherlands. Marcel was a former crew member of the Dutch TWD Pulling Team called ,,Miss Liberty´´ and currently a member of the Simply Irresistible Pulling Team from Dronten, the Netherlands. He´s also the current president of the Dutch Tractor Pulling Organization ,,NTTO´´. What are you doing in your normal life?
Marcel Hoornsman: As owner of MH Tech I am working as  a specialist in Warranty and Organization for Agricultural dealers. I am working an all kind of challenges from a service perspective. I also work together with the BOSCH and Stanadyne importer in the Netherlands where my job is to represent the agricultural part on injection- and exhaust treatment systems. Besides that I am a part time teacher on an Agricultural school where I try to teach young farmers how machines are working from a technical point of view. What do you like to do in your free time, except Tractor Pulling?
Marcel Hoornsman: I like to spend time on my race bicycle when I am not in my workshop busy with all kind of projects my wife is creating. What do you like on Tractor Pulling?
Marcel Hoornsman: To achieve the impossible with that much power, limited by rules so challenging enough to be creative. Together with a Team of people, with the same drive, building something that is unique and has the potential to win. From the organization point of view, as President of the NTTO, I like to work with a Team of people and motivate them to use their unique skills in order to make the complete organization better. Sometimes people do not know that they have the skills and the right potential to do so much more as they do now. My drive is to make that happen. What was your first Tractor Pulling event?
Marcel Hoornsman: A famous event in the late 70‘s on the Flevohof (NL). What is your favourite Event / Pulling track?
Marcel Hoornsman: No particular event, but in general every event where you can see that the organization is improving compared to the previous years. To name one event as favorite is not fair to all others on the same level. When and where do you have driven a Pulling Tractor for the first time?
Marcel Hoornsman: The Miss Liberty TWD in June 1999 on a demo pull in Aizenee, France. What was your biggest success?
Marcel Hoornsman: Our Team was given the Puller of the Year award in 2002, that is a very special price you can only earn by what you do and how your colleagues appreciate your Teamwork. Which Pulling classes do you like too?
Marcel Hoornsman: Every class where you can see that the fight is done on the track in a fair way. If the top of the class is very close, it does not matter if it is a Modified, (Farm) Stock or Truck class. What was your biggest disappointment?
Marcel Hoornsman: Loosing so many good people with the same drive for the sport as I have. Sometimes it is because a fight against a disease can’t be won, sometimes because of an accident, but there are enough moments where you need to take a dessision and you cannot ask the person for advise anymore. On those moments you have to find the answer yourself without the backup from the person you could always ask for help. Which things must be change in the future of the Tractor Pulling sport?
Marcel Hoornsman: We should not sit back and think that we are a unique thing in the world. If we innovate on all different levels, our sport will survive. This will sometimes mean that something will change where we do not understand why immediately, but after a longer period of time. What's your plans for the future in Tractor Pulling?
Marcel Hoornsman: Continue as President of the NTTO! We are working on something the previous board members have paved for us. The NTTO is growing as an organization, not only with new members, but also as a professional organization with a high quality standard where local governments like to deal with.
From a Team prospective: continue to improve and try to stay in the top of the class we are active in. All this together with a close Team of people who share the same hobby. What was for you the most important moment in the sport?
Marcel Hoornsman: The goose skin on my arms when I saw a Tractor running in front of a Sledge for the first time ( 40 years ago), this infected me and made me decide I want to be a part of that. What was your favourite Pulling Tractor project in the workshop during a winter?
Marcel Hoornsman: Building our own Tractor back together again after the crash in Germany last year. It was very difficult to find the motivation again after such a big shock. Besides the mechanical challenge, it was a huge team effort to be on the track again in Zwolle this year. Normally we are not that nervous before a Pull, but this time all Team members were struggling with their emotions. It was good to end up on the podium again with 2 good runs and drink a beer afterwards. Teambuilding with ups and downs, that is how we can call it, but in the end we are on track again and motivated to make it hard again for our competitors. Something you want to say?
Marcel Hoornsman: It would be great if we talk, but also listen to each other. Everybody can have is own opinion, but we sometimes need to reconsider if pushing your opinion at all costs is worth it? We are not breeding pigeons, I know we are motorsport people and all of us would like to win, but it is not a shame to say sorry sometimes after something has been said in the heat of the fight. Thank you for your time and good luck!
