2021 Quambatook Pull cancelled

The Australian Tractor Pulling Championships at Quambatook on Easter Saturday is cancelled for 2021. It is with a heavy heart that we advise that with the rules and regulations that are to be implemented to be a COVID safe event, holding the Championships wouldn’t be feasible. We also want to keep our little town, Quambatook, COVID free as well as protect our spectators, competitors, volunteers and committee members. This wasn’t an easy decision to make but we feel it is the best for everyone involved.
We would like to thank you all for your ongoing support; sponsors, competitors, community and would-be spectators.
The Quambatook Tractor Pullers Association hope that you have a fun filled Easter, we know it’s not the same without being in Quamby with the tractor pull but whatever you decide to do please stay safe.

Whilst we are all disappointed at the moment, we look forward to welcoming everyone back to Quambatook, Easter Saturday, 16th April 2022.

The new Light Unlimited of the Wicked Pulling Team

From Shelbyville, Indiana in the USA, the Wicked Pulling Team around Doug and Renee Theobald have built a new V8 Hemi powered tractor for the 6000lbs light unlimited class during the winter/spring of 2019.
The Wicked Pulling Team began with pulling in 1981 with Doug Theobald's father, Keith, running a single engine modified tractor. They ran on the state and regional circuit with single engine mod through 1987. As modifieds were adding more engines and the TWD truck class was gaining popularity, they made the decision to switch to the TWD class. The Team from Indiana has competed with the TWD trucks on the national circuit since 1989.
Doug always had a goal to someday get back to the modified class and the light unlimited class seemed like a good fit to be able to do this. Before they started to build the new light unlimited tractor, the team competed with 2 TWD trucks in the NTPA Grand National Championship during the last 10 years. The TWD trucks called ''Wicked'' and ''Pretty Wicked'' are powered by blown Miner Bros. Racing (MBR) V8 Hemi engines with 526 cui on methanol fuel. The Pretty Wicked has a 1923 Ford T-Bucket bodyshell and the Wicked truck and 2011 Chevrolet pickup fiberglass bodyshell. Wicked is now driven by Doug and Renee’s son Grant and Pretty Wicked is driven by Renee.
The new light unlimited received a steel wedge frame with a 3 bar chrome-moly roll cage, a custom-built rack and pinion steering, a Racing driver seat with a 5 point harness and a Rockwell rear end with a custom-built drawbar.
The fenders are made off aluminum sheet metal and are pretty light compared to steel sheet metal fenders. The new wicked vinyl graphics on the aluminum fenders were done by the company called Sholty Designs in the USA. The whole chassis and the fenders for the new machine were built by Modern Machine & Tool from Van Buren, Indiana. The company of Les and Brad Korporal have built many pulling chassis for modified tractors like the triple Allison ''Money Pit'', the twin Allison ''Top Gun'' or the 4 V8 Hemi powered ''Money Maker'' in the past. The Chassis of the Full Blown Wicked was originally Keith and Ricky Long’s old modified tractor called ''MavTV'' from Warsaw, Kentucky and Modern Machine & Tool Inc put together the driveline, rear end, gearbox, motor mounts and much more.
The Rockwell rear end in the tractor has a Humpco billet aluminum center section with a Humpco billet aluminum diff, a custom built Modern Machine ring and pinion gear, Crutchfield billet aluminum planetary carrier housing with 4 custom built planetaries on each site and Engler Machine billet aluminum brake calipers with laser cut steel brake discs.
Also completely new built is the drivetrain of the new Full Blown Wicked. The new drivetrain got a new Modern Machine crossbox with custom built gears, a billet steel driveshaft between the crossbox and the reverser,  a Modern Machine gearbox with an SCS reverser and custom built driveshafts between the clutch and the crossbox. All the custom built driveshafts were built by Modern Machine too. Modern Machine also did all the calculations for the new drivetrain on the light unlimited. The crossbox is not only developed and calculated for 2 engines, with a dropbox on the crossbox it's possible to run with 3 Hemis too. According to the NTPA rules, the crossbox is protected by an SFI proved shatter blanket around housing. It should protect the spectators and the drivers if the crossbox flies apart because of a technical failure.
Each engine on the tractor received a Crower 3 disc centrifugal clutch with a Trick Titanium bell housing.
The Wicked Pulling Team have purchased for the new light mod a set of new cut 30.5-32 Mitas Powerpull tires on new polished Midwest aluminum rims.
The new Full Blown Wicked Light Unlimited is powered by 2 blown Miner Bros Racing V8 Hemi power plants with 526cui displacement on methanol fuel. Each engine got an MBR billet aluminum block with Darton billet steel sleeves, MBR Hemi billet aluminum cylinder heads with Victory valves and PSI springs, MBR aluminum sheet metal valve covers, MBR exhaust headers, a Crower billet steel camshaft, a Bryant billet steel crankshaft with BME billet aluminum rods and pistons, a MSD 44 Pro Mag ignition, a Racepak data logger, a Modern Machine stainless steel sheet metal fuel tank for both engines, a Waterman fuel pump, Aviaid oil pump, a Dan Olson Racing aluminum oil pan, and a PSI c-rotor screw blower with a CGC carbon fiber scoop. The screw blowers on the engines are covered by a shatter blanket.
After a lot of work by the crew consisting of, Josh Myles, Keith Theobald, Grant Theobald, Mason Theobald, and everyone at Theobald Farming, during the winter and spring of 2019, the new light unlimited debuted at the NTPA Grand National opener in Benson, North Carolina in the beginning of June 2019 and it was a great start into the season. With a win in the second session, Doug Theobald overtakes directly the lead in the point standings of the Championship. With 2 further wins in Mount Sterling, Illinois and Bowling Green, Ohio, 2 runner up positions and 2 third places, the Grand National Championship in the light unlimited was decided at the 2nd session in Bowling Green, Ohio, the last and final round for the class. With another 3rd place finish, Doug takes the NTPA Grand National title in the class 3 points ahead of the 2015 light unl champ Keith Wayson with Super Bee.
In February 2020, the Team competed with their new Full Blown Wicked at the National Farm Machinery Show for the first time in the modified class with 3 blown MBR V8 Hemi engines. Because of the different rules in the mod class, the PSI screw blowers were changed to DMPE 14-71 roots blowers with different CGC carbon fiber injector scoops. It was a good week at the NFMS Pull but not completely damage free. At the first session on Wednesday evening, Doug Theobald finished in a strong 4th place. With a nice pass of 232.194 feet, the team was qualified for the finals on Saturday night but also had a lot of work before the finals. On the top and on the front left engine they had a huge backfire which caused a lot of damage to the engines. The backfire, caused by a hung intake valve, on the top engine lifted the blower and the backfire on the front left engine blew a head gasket out and damaged the head and the pistons too.
Because of the short space of time to repair those 2 damaged engines (the front left MBR engine was badly damaged and couldn't repaired in Louisville), Craig and Ashley Corzine owners of the modified tractor called ''Shell Rotella Second Degree Burn from Assumption, Illinois lended them an engine for the finals on Saturday night which saved them a lot of time, because a drive back home to their workshop and building another new power plant would cost a lot of time. After a lot of work, the Full Blown Wicked was finally ready again for the finals on Saturday.  Doug had a good start in front of the Ironman sled but during the run, another backfire from a cracked fuel fitting on the top MBR Hemi power plant cost him top 3 finish. The distance was 222.709 feet which was enough for a 4th place in the end.
But for the 2021 season, they have some more plans with the new modified tractor.
For the upcoming NTPA Grand National season, they will again concentrate on the light unlimited class to defend their 2019 GN title, but they also have the plan for the next summer to make some runs with their Full Blown Wicked in the unlimited class with 3 blown MBR V8 Hemi engines.

Former NTPA GN Champion Kevin Bradtmueller has passed

From NTPA:
WPI/NTPA is shocked and saddened to report the death on Monday, January 25 of Kevin Bradtmueller, 60, of Hoagland, Indiana. Mr. Bradtmueller had competed for nearly 20 years over stints in the 1980s and 2010s---all in the Modified Mini division ("Whomp Ass Express")---and was the Association's 1980 Grand National champion in the 1,700-lb. class.
Mr. Bradtmueller got his start in pulling by joining his hometown Four Kings Team in the mid-1970s and began piloting "Express" as soon as he was old enough to be licensed. In an era in which championships were chased from coast to coast, Mr. Bradtmueller claimed his GN title---by two points---in his first full season by winning events in Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Bowling Green, Ohio; and Fresno, California. He and his high school friend, Ken Bultemeier Jr., and their supercharged 350 Chevrolet finished second that same year in the 1,500-lb. Mini division.
Throughout the balance of the decade, the pair claimed a dozen top-10 GN-point finishes across both weights. In addition to his driving abilities, Mr. Bradtmueller was known for superlative welding and fabrication, skills which he learned and practiced while employed by Dave Linker and Toby Rohrbach's Pro-Trac Engineering. Based in Hoagland, located just southeast of Fort Wayne, Pro-Trac was among the premier Modified and Mini chassis builders of the 1980s, most famously of Bruce Hutcherson's aluminum wedge "Makin' Bacon Special," Dan Utz's "Thumper," and Jim Brockmann's "Taylor Rental Special" Mini and Inlaws & Outlaws vehicles.
After an extended hiatus from driving, Mr. Bradtmueller returned to the seat and to national competition in 2010. Teaming again with Mr. Bultemeier---with Mr. Linker returning the favor as their crewman---the partners won four straight hooks in mid-2015. Then, in 2016, he directed his creative energies toward building two new team tractors, namely "Whomp Ass Express" and "WAE Flip Side." Together, they have since won three times in Region II competition, and the latter claimed the 2016 Region IV championship.
Per Mr. Bradtmueller's request, there will be no public visitation or funeral service.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Bradtmueller's family and many friends in pulling.

New Swiss Mini Modified

At the 2021 season, the Swiss nation will have a new mini modified pulling team on the competitions. The newly founded Bastard Pulling Team around Sven Müller and Sven Riedener from Birmesdorf, Switzerland have built a brand new V8 Hemi powered 950kg/2095lbs mini modified machine during the last 3 years. For Sven Müller and his team is the tractor pulling sport a new experience, because they never have built a pulling tractor before. But due to less experience, they received a lot of help from a pulling team in south Germany, from a Swiss drag racing team and from a couple of local Swiss companies during the building time of the new project.
Team owners Sven Müller and Sven Riedener were infected with the tractor pulling virus in 2014. Especially Sven Müller was impressed by the modified classes.
After some considerations, he decided to build a 950kg / 2095lbs mini mod tractor with a V8 racing engine. Shortly after that, he started looking for an engine, which did not turn out so easily. His plan from the start on was to have a mini mod with a competitive engine with a minimum of 2200 hp. After quite a long search, Sven found something at the Swiss Trouble Racing Team of Marcus Hilt. After a visit to Marcus Hilt's workshop, he decided he wants an engine like he has in his dragster. Through the contact of drag racing driver Marcus Hilt, the relationship with the Ghost Buster Pulling Team came about. An appointment was made over Christmas 2017 to see how they have built their whole frame for the Ghost Buster 5. The Swiss Team was welcomed in a familiar way and they were told everything about their experience in the mini modified class.
Then the guys came to the business part, the components for the chassis, the engine plate and the material for the exhaust headers were ordered.
It took 4 long months until all the material for the frame was delivered to their workshop in Switzerland. In April of 2018, Sven and his team started to build the new chassis and welded the frame rails, the roll cage and all the other parts. All those components for the chassis were in laborious work welded during the weekends.
The mini modified received a brand new homemade chrome-moly tube frame with a homemade 2 bar chrome-moly roll cage, a Kirkey aluminum racing driver seat, a homemade rack and pinion steering, homemade chrome-moly wheelie bars and an Advanced Chassis sheet metal rearend with an Advanced Chassis drawbar from the USA.
The new frame for the mini was developed by Stefan Schwarz (Schwarz Frästechnik) of the Ghost Buster Pulling Team from Oberharmersbach in Germany. The frame of the tractor is a copy of their procharged V8 Hemi powered mini called ''Ghost Buster 5'' which they have built during the winter of 2016 / 2017. The only thing which is different compared to the Ghost Buster 5 is the rearend. The Ghost Buster Team using a homemade planetaries rear axle which the new Little Bastard not has. That Advanced Chassis rear axle in the Little Bastard has no planetaries.
The rear axle with the differential was bought from the Lambada Pulling Team in Zwolle, the Netherlands. Also, the rear wheels were purchased in the Netherlands. The rear wheels on the new ride are a set of used cut Pioneer Puller mini rod tires on polished Real Wheel aluminum rims. This set was purchased from the ''The Riddle Pulling Team'' in Putten, the Netherlands.
After the chassis and the engine was almost ready, there came the most exciting part for the team, the Hemi engine was mounted on the new rolling chassis. But that happiness was short lived, the power plant was way too far back on the chassis, which would have meant a much worse weight distribution on the tractor. With today's tires and the high power, it's very important to have most of the weight on the nose of the tractor. The low center of gravity of the driver's position is another very important point today to have a good balance on difficult tracks. But the main problem for that engine position problem was the snout of the fuel pump for the engine. The snout was too long and the only thing was to order a new shorter snout for the fuel pump from the USA to sort this problem out. With this change, the power plant could move 12cm more forward on the chassis. Another interesting thing was the weight of the tractor.
The estimates of the team were 750kg with the chassis, rear axle and engine, but the surprise came when they put the rolling chassis with the engine on the scale, only 650kg and that with all attachments parts which was a great result for them. After the engine was newly positioned on the chassis, the team started to work on the position for the fuel and the oil tank. After the calculations were done, the new 35l aluminum fuel tank and oil tank were manufactured and new brackets on the engine for the tanks were built.

The new rear fenders are homemade and were off aluminum sheet metal. The parts for the sheet metal were laser cut by a local company and the parts for the fenders were later welded together by the team himself. For the new paint job on the tractor, the Swiss team received support from the Swiss company called ''Mäder AG''.
The Walter Mäder AG Coatings Department is part of the Mäder Group, an international manufacturer of specialist industrial coatings. Walter Mäder AG has been one of the most innovative industrial coating manufacturers in Europe for more than 75 years. After the paint has arrived from the Mäder AG, Rene Fischer did all the paintwork on the chassis, fenders and the tanks.
The Advanced rearend in the mini has a new TRB Machine & Tool billet aluminum center section with a used billet aluminum diff from the Lambada Pulling Team in the Netherlands, a Rockwell F105 ring and pinion gear, Strange floater axles and Willwood brake calipers with steel brake discs.
Also completely new calculated and built is the whole drivetrain of the tractor. The newly built drivetrain received a new Lenco gearbox with a Lenco reverser, a custom built steel driveshaft between the rearend and the reverser, a Crower 10 inch centrifugal clutch with 3 discs and a Lakewood steel clutch bell housing from the USA. The new custom built driveshaft for the vehicle was machined by Schwarz Frästechnik from Oberharmersbach in Germany.
The new Little Bastard is powered by a blown Jan-Cen Racing V8 Hemi engine with a displacement of 521cui on methanol fuel. After all the parts were delivered for the engine from the USA, the Bastard Pulling Team, together with the Trouble Racing Team around Marcus Hilt from Grellingen in Switzerland started to build up the motor in the workshop of Marcus Hilt. Marcus Hilt and his Trouble Racing Team owns a Tommy Mauney built 1963 Chevrolet Corvette pro modified dragster with a Noonan 521 cui engine with about 3000 hp. Driver Marcus Hilt and his team compete with the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette pro modified dragster in the FIA European Drag Racing Championship since many years.
The power plant in the mini modified received an AJPE TFX billet aluminum block with billet steel sleeves, a Bryant 4.150 stroke billet steel crankshaft with billet aluminum rods and pistons, BAE Hemi Stage 6 cylinder heads with aluminum valve covers, a billet steel cam, homemade exhaust headers, a DMPE 14-71 blower with a carbon fiber scoop, a TAE (Tom Anderson Enterprises) fuel pump, a homemade aluminum fuel and oil tank, a dry sump lubrication with an Aviaid oil pump, an MSD 44 Pro Mag ignition and a new Racepak data logger.
The Jan-Cen Racing power plant was used before in Marcus Hilt's pro modified dragster, but has been updated with new parts. Jan-Cen Racing engines is the company of Mike Janis Jr, the son of 3 times NHRA pro modified drag racing champion Mike Janis from the USA. The company Jan-Cen Motorsports was formed in 1958 by James Janis, Sr. and Tony Centra, Jan-Cen Motor Sports has built its reputation as the number one stop for high-performance products and service. What started as a mere dream for quality engine service over sixty years ago has turned into a mark for perfection. Located in Elma, New York, Jan-Cen Motorsports specializes in a variety of areas, which include race engine building, high-performance products, snowmobile sales and repairs, and ATV sales and repairs. They service Elma, the surrounding Buffalo area, and all of Western New York.
Also at Jan-Cen Motor Sports, the racing engine specialists are always doing constant R&D to better improve your motor's performance. Their in-house dyno helps them better understand their engine's tendencies and makes for dramatic increases in horsepower. Now run by Janis' sons, Jan-Cen Motor Sports maintains its status as racers' and consumers' number one stop for high performance in Western New York.
The Jan-Cen Racing engine will have around 2500hp with this whole setup around there. The team, together with Marcus Hilt already have fired up the engine a couple of times in front of their workshop and everything worked pretty well. Also, the first little rollout in front of the workshop was done and they found out that the clutch worked not 100%. But, the problem was already solved with some changes.
For the future, the young Swiss team have planned to compete with the new mini mod in the German Championship and on some pulls outside of the Championship, like at the Knutwiler Powerdays in Knutwil, Switzerland.
The decision was made to compete in the German Championship because Switzerland has no sled or a Championship for mini modified tractors in their country.
Another point was, Switzerland currently have no further mini mod team in their country.
Usually, the maiden run for the new Little Bastard was planned for the 2020 season, but due to the Covid 19 pandemic was that not possible. Currently, the new tractor standing in the workshop and waiting for his first attempt in front of the sled and one is sure from the horsepower view the Little Bastard should be competitive against the other top tractors in the German Championship.

Sven Müller would also like to give a big thanks to Marcus Hilt of the Trouble Racing Team for the support with the engine, Christian Ebner for the technical support, the Ghost Buster Pulling Team for the support with the chassis and parts, Nicole Markwalder of the Mäder AG for the paint, Dällenbach Roger Tec for the machined CNC parts and Rene Fischer for the paint job!
