R.I.P Dennis Johnson
Last week, a very sad news was published on the Pulling Reference Group on Facebook. Pulling competitor Dennis Johnson from Fairbury, Nebraska in the USA is not anymore with us.
The super stock competitor passed away on the 16th of April 2023 at the age of 75.
Dennis competed in different super stock divisions in the US with his Allis-Chalmers/AGCO-Allis super stock machines called ''Shagnasty'' and ''Shagnastyeerr'' for many years. He started his career in the tractor pulling sport in his home state, Nebraska, in 1982. In his first 10 years, Dennis competed mainly with his Allis-Chalmers D21 super stock tractor called ''Shagnasty'' on regional pulls in Nebraska. Dennis did his first step into the national circuit of the pulling sport with the support of Bryan and Ernie Conner in 1992.

Dennis did his first step into the national circuit of the pulling sport with the support of Bryan and Ernie Conner in 1992.
In 92 at the national pull in Macon, Missouri, the Allis-Chalmers D21 alky burner was piloted by Ernie Conner in a 21 competitor-strong field in the 7500lbs super stock division. Ernie finished 14th there with the tractor. Dennis Johnson did his first national competition in the hot seat of his Shagnasty in early August 1992 with a 15th place finish in the 5500lbs super stock division. In the early September of 92, Dennis earned his first national win with the Allis-Chalmers in a pull off final against the Conner brother's White V8 CAT-powered tractor called ''Bad Medicine'' at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Kansas. Until 1996, he competed with the Allis-Chalmers D21 alky burner on the national circuit.
In 1997, he did a time-out for one year and built a completely new Shagnasty for the 1998 season. The newly built tractor was a component tractor with an AGCO-Allis 9670 sheet metal hood and a newly built homemade tube chassis with a truck rearend.
The engine under the hood of the component machine was a 6 cylinder Deutz engine with 4 turbochargers in 2 stages and 585cui on alcohol fuel. At the time, it was the first alky burner super stock with a Deutz engine in the USA. The new tractor got the name ''Shagnastyeerr".
In 1998, Dennis competed full-time on the NTPA Grand national circuit and finished 5th with the Deutz-powered AGCO-Allis alky burner.

In 1998, Dennis competed full-time on the NTPA Grand national circuit and finished 5th with the Deutz-powered AGCO-Allis alky burner.
After a year of learning to understand how the new component tractor is working, he really started his hunt for the wins. With 4 NTPA Grand National event wins in 1999, he became with his AGCO-Allis 9670 component super stock a real force to be reckoned with. With further good results during the season, Dennis placed his tractor in the top 5 of the NTPA Grand National point standings. That meant he was qualified for the Enderle Pull Off at the end of the season. At the Enderle Pull Off in Fort Recovery, Ohio, he beat all his 4 rivals, including Lustick's AGCO V8 CAT-powered Silver Bullet and Blackbourn's Case IH Slowride and won the prestigious Enderle Pull Off for the first time.
With that win, the Shagnasty became the meanest and one of the best running super stock with a German power plant under hood in the US super stock scene. Just the rpm ranges in which the turbocharged Deutz engine was running were impressive. But sometimes his tractor was also known for some spectacular wild rides on the track. One of these wild rides he had at the 2000 NFMS Pull in Louisville, Kentucky. The front end was sky-high in the air and after a little brake correction, his right rear Firestone All Traction Puller tire lost its traction and everything ended in a rough crash landing with a broken front axle and an opened hood.

After his great 1999 season, he backed a little bit off the throttle for the 2000 season and didn't drove a full NTPA Grand National season.
He did a partial NTPA GN schedule in 2000, but had a pretty good season at all and still ended up in 3rd in the GN point standings. Alongside his partial NTPA schedule, he also competed in the other big US pulling association, the ATPA in the Grand American series with the Shagnasty. Like at the NTPA GN circuits, he was successful at the ATPA Grand American circuits as well. Six place finishes in the NTPA GN followed in 2001 and 2002. After 2002 his appearances on the NTPA and ATPA National scene got fewer and fewer between.
In 2002, Dennis and his component super stock machine were invited across the pond to the European Superpull in Ahoy, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. For Dennis was that the first trip to Europe, he was never before there. By the note, his ancestors came from East Friesland in Germany. His great-grandfather immigrated to Nebraska, USA in 1863.
Together with the John Deere 7810 component super stock tractor called ''Color Of Money'' from Dennis and Brent Payne, Johnson competed with his AGCO-Allis 9670 in the 7700lbs super stock class there against the top European super stocks. Dennis did 2 nice runs there and won the competition by more than 3 1/2 m over the Case IH called ''Red Alert'' of Peter Clarke from Great Britain and around 5 m over Willem Veldhuizen's John Deere called ''Magkal Bits N' Pieces''.
In 2009, the Shagnasty was a little bit more to see again on the pulling tracks in the USA with Runnin' Bare driver and friend Jeff Hirt in the seat. Runnin' Bare Team also competed with a 6 cylinder Deutz powered AGCO-Allis 9670 in the super stock class between 2000 and 2005. The Shagnasty built on its successes from the past and showed that it was not yet a thing of the old iron of the past.

Jeff Hirt did some impressive runs with the Deutz-powered machine on different pulls in Ohio and also at the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Champions Tour events. Jeff won with the tractor the OSTPA pull in Ashland, Ohio, and the Lucas Oil PPL Champions Tour round in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
For the next decade, Dennis did some changes to the tractor, especially to the sheet metal. After more than 12 years with a AGCO-Allis sheet metal on the tractor, he went back to the roots and restored the tractor fully. The AGCO-Allis 9670 hood was replaced by an Allis-Chalmers D21 hood, like on his old super stock machine before his component tractor.
The turbocharged Deutz engine under the hood still remained, but was already bored up from 585cui to 650cui. After the restoration, Dennis signed in the Shagnasty for the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Champions Tour, but he didn't compete for full-time there for the next years. After 2014, Dennis Johnson competed with his Shagnasty again fewer and fewer, and at the end, the tractor was parked in his workshop during the last years. Since then, the Allis-Chalmers D21 hasn't seen a pulling track anymore.
With Dennis Johnson, the tractor pulling sport has lost a great competitor, ambassador, fair competitor, and innovator in the super stock class.

Dennis also helped many other pulling competitors when they had problems, gave new people when they started in the sport a lot of advice for their tractors or helped teams with building parts for their pulling machines.
The competitors, organizers, and fans of the pulling sport will definitely sorely miss him in the future.
Dennis Johnson will always be in the mind of the people and will never be forgotten.
Our thoughts are with the whole Johnson family and the Shagnasty Team.

National 4x4 at the Honky Tonk 300 from Millers Tavern VA April 15 2023
The National 4x4 class was light, to be honest. But you have 5 or 6 of the toughest trucks in the country. I would put them up against any truck and know they will get all they can handle. John Davis and Young Gun started the class out and he led from start to finish. A new look for Young Gun for 2023, but a similar result. This truck and driver like the Millers Tavern dirt.

CH Rail from Sweden switches into Limited Super Stock class
The CH Rail Motorsport Team from Spannarp in Sweden will switch with their 3.6t Volvo BM farm stock tractor called ''CH Rail'' into the 3.5t/7700lbs limited super stock class in 2023. After many years successfully in the 3.6t farm stock division in Sweden, the Swedish team around Caj Höst will make the next step in the tractor pulling sport. For the guys from Spannarp will be that a new challenge in 2023. Not only the class will be new for them, but also the fuel on the engine. In the limited super stock class, they have to run with alcohol instead of care diesel, because alcohol is the only fuel that is allowed in the limited super stock class in Europe.
For that switch to the limited super stock class, the team will not convert the 7l turbocharged Volvo TD 60 power plant from care diesel to alcohol fuel. The old 6 cylinder Volvo TD 60 farm stock engine of the tractor is already sold to a new owner in the Netherlands.
For the switch to the limited super stock class and for the completely new engine, they will receive help from Emil and Olof Roth of Maskin och Motorteknik i Skåne from Ljungbyhed in south Sweden. Emil Roth was already involved in the building of the Volvo BM tractor many years ago for the 3.6t farm stock class. In the winter of 2018/2019, Emil converted the tractor for the team into a component tractor. Until the end of 2022, the CH Rail Team competed with the Volvo BM in the Swedish Championship and on some pulls in Denmark and Norway.
The engine under the Volvo BM hood will be completely different compared to the old engine. For the switch to the limited super stock class, Emil Roth and the CH Rail Pulling Team decided not to build again 6 cylinder Volvo TD 60 power plant on alcohol for the formerly 3.6t component farm stock. They decided to build a completely new 6 cylinder Sisu engine with a capacity of 7.6l and one turbocharger on alcohol.
For Emil, is that not the first alcohol-fired AGCO Power/Sisu engine which he will build up for Caj Höst and his Team. Already 2 years ago, Emil Roth and his brother Olof built for Tommy Karlsson and Mikael Noorgard from Jeppo in Finland a complete Valtra component limited super stock tractor which is called ''New Generation'' now. So for Emil is the world of limited super stock class, not a new challenge.
The new engine for CH Rail will be almost the same, which is running in the New Generation of Tommy Karlsson and Mikael Noorgard.
The power plant in the Volvo BM will have a bored-up Sisu cast iron engine block with a counterweighted and balanced Sisu steel crankshaft, new JD Motorteknik billet steel rods with new billet aluminum pistons, a modified 24-valve Sisu cylinder head with stock valves and stronger valve springs, a billet valve train developed by Maskin och Motorteknik and the New Generation Pulling Team, a billet steel camshaft, a homemade aluminum intake and stainless steel exhaust manifold, a billet Holset HX82 turbocharger with a billet aluminum intake impeller wheel, a homemade aluminum oil pan, an Aviaid oil pump, a homemade stainless steel fuel tank, a Waterman fuel pump, and a MaxxEcu EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) system.

The MaxxEcu EFI system will be the same as on the alcohol-fired turbocharged AGCO Power 634 power plant of New Generation. Also, the function will be the same.
With the MaxxEcu EFI system on the Sisu engine, they can control the engine. The ECU is the brain of the operation, and It uses engine RPM and other signals from different sensors to meter the fuel. It does this by telling the fuel injectors when and how long to be open and deliver fuel into the inlet ports of the cylinder head. The Ignition system is a Fueltech FT-Spark CDI system with one coil for each cylinder. Also, all data logging is built in the ECU. The system also measures the temperatures of every single cylinder, the oil pressure, and the temperatures of the motor oil.
On the New Generation, the EFI system worked very well so far and Emil Roth and the New Generation Team had great results with it.
For 2023, Caj Höst and his CH Rail Motorsport Team have planned to compete with the converted Volvo BM in the Swedish Championship and maybe also on some pulls outside of Sweden to gain more experience with the new build up engine on alcohol for the future.
The maiden run of the CH Rail with the new turbocharged Sisu alky burner engine is planned for the 19th of May 2023 at the Lidköping City Pull in Sweden.

Green Monster Stage 4 on the dyno
Last Week on Friday and Saturday, the Green Monster Pulling Team from Füchtorf in Germany have tested their twin Allison V1710 v12 powered 3.5t / 7700lbs modified tractor called '' Green Monster Stage 4'' on the hub dyno. The dyno runs with their stair step Allison V12 powered machine were done in the warehouse next to the workshop of the Green Monster Team in Füchtorf. Those test passes were made with the hub dyno of Scheepers Motorsport. Scheepers Motorsport comes from Xanten, Germany, around 140 km southwest of Füchtorf. When Scheepers Motorsport arrived at the workshop of the Green Monster Team, the team of Scheepers Motorsport started to build up the hub dyno in the hall next to the Green Monster workshop.
After everything was ready, the Green Monster Stage 4 was brought from the workshop to the hall, where was the dyno. After that, the rear wheels of the tractor were dismantled and both generators of the hub dyno were fitted to the rear axle of the tractor on both sites. Whitin' 30 min the Green Monster Stage 4 was fitted to the hub dyno and was ready to run on it. The first test passes on Saturday with the tractor on the dyno were made only with one Allison V12 power plant. On day 2 the top Allison V1710 V12 engine was fitted to the tractor and was tested. In these test passes on Saturday, the guys not tested the tractor with 2 running engines on the hub dyno.
During those 2 days, the team tested some different settings on the Allison engines of the Green Monster Stage 4. Mainly in this test, the whole fuel tables of the Mick's Performance EFI system on the Allison power plants were adjusted. These little and fine adjustments on the fuel tables of the EFI system should round off the setup as a whole. All in all, the Green Monster Team was very satisfied with the results on this test days and with the hub dyno of Scheepers Motorsport too!
The Green Monster Stage 4 wasn't the only pulling tractor which was tested on the hub dyno of Scheepers Motorsport. Also, Christian Kaisers Fendt 930 limited super stock called ''Giftzwerg'' was tested on this dyno to find the right settings for the MAN engine in the past.
Already a couple of years ago, the Team has tested their Green Monster Stage 4 on the hub dyno of the John Deere Pulling Team in Thy, Denmark. But this test wasn't successful due to technical problems and the test results were not good.
With that positive test last weekend, the Green Monster Stage 4 is almost ready now for the season and for the season opener in Germany at their home ground in Füchtorf on the 30th of April 2022.
The Green Monster Pulling Team would like to thank Scheepers Motorsport for the possibility to test their tractor on the dyno!
