Mid-Florida Tractor Pullers Association Joins NTPA as Member State

From NTPA:
After a quarter-century absence from the Sunshine State, the National Tractor Pullers Association welcomes the Mid-Florida Tractor Pullers Association as its newest member organization. With this addition, established MFTPA events in Ocala and Green Cove Springs are expected to become NTPA national events next January and April, respectively.
In truck and tractor pulling, competition vehicles of like construction take turns dragging a 20-ton weight transfer sled along a straight, dirt track to reach the greatest distance. Top finishers earn prize money and points toward the pursuit of national championships. The NTPA is the world's longest-running and most-respected sanctioning organization for premier-level pulling and will present over 70 national events in 2021 featuring custom-built farm tractors, pickup trucks, and dragster modifieds.
Headquartered in Ocala, Mid-Florida will embark on a sanctioning partnership with the NTPA in 2022. Organizers voted to claim the NTPA state charter, whereupon World Pulling International recognized the group as the accredited representative of the state's resident competitors at its regular April business meeting.
"There's not a finer sport," began Rodney Swift, MFTPA President. "I want to take [Florida pulling] to the next level and get it as big as we can go." In addition to the Ocala native Swift, the slate of officers will include Brian Capparelli of Plant City as Vice President.
"We've already got two [events] committed," Swift revealed of the MFTPA's immediate actions. "Ocala and Clay County will be for sure NTPA Regional National pulls, and we're working on two more."
The NTPA’s history of pulling in Florida dates to the Lake County Fairgrounds in Eustis in February 1972. By the late 1970s, a distinct "Southern circuit" of championship events had developed in Florida and neighboring Georgia. The most recent sanctioned events to be staged in the state were Grand National invitationals held in Naples and Milton in March 1995.
But the long-dormant relationship with NTPA has been re-energized recently, as a few of the Association's regular northern competitors made trips in the off-season to perform in front of enthusiastic southern crowds. Larry Richwine, NTPA's Tech Services Director, has been the announcer for Mid-Florida's circuit for several winters and facilitated the union.
"I've been fortunate to get to know Rodney, and I've gotten to watch his operation firsthand from my location in the announcer's booth," said Richwine. "He and his track crew and support staff have already shown their professionalism. I'm proud to have been a part of bringing Mid-Florida and NTPA together."
"Welcome back, Florida!", exclaimed Gregg Randall, the NTPA’s Executive Director of its return to citrus country. "I was in Green Cove Springs with the scoreboard in the fall of 1991 after my first full year with NTPA. It was a whole different kind of experience pulling in that part of the country. It's been missing from our calendar for a while, so it's fortunate that Larry and Rodney's team got to talking about a formal partnership to resurrect top-level Sunshine State pulling."
"I believe both our members and our fans will enjoy the opportunity to mix a bit of warm-weather vacationing in with NTPA-caliber competition," said Randall. "Get a hold of a 2022 calendar and start making plans."
The MFTPA is already the organizational force behind the multi-session events at the Florida Agriculture Center and Horse Park in Ocala and the Clay County Fairgrounds in Green Cove Springs. Coldwater, Michigan's Dan Nearpass has supplied his "Humiliator" weight transfers for several years, while Mike Griffin and Dale MacGregor, both NTPA-certified tech officials from Tennessee, have overseen contest operations.
"When you get to a point where we're at, you can only get so big without bringing different stuff in," Swift said of the move to team up with the NTPA.
"It was time to go to the next level to keep making bigger, better stuff happen."
Tentative 2022 dates for the newly sanctioned events are Friday and Saturday, January 28-29 for Ocala and Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10 for Green Cove Springs. Once they have been determined, divisions to appear will be announced at the NTPA's official website, NTPAPULL.com, and via its social media platforms. It is anticipated that Ocala will be limited entry/invitational due to a facility curfew but that Green Cove Springs will be open-entry.

More information about the MFTPA can be found at midfltractorpullers.com and on the club's Facebook page.

The MFTPA joins the Hoosier State Tractor Pullers Association (Indiana), the United Pullers of the Carolinas, the United Pullers of Minnesota, the Wisconsin Tractor Pullers Association, and the Wolverine Tractor Pullers Association (Michigan) as sanctioners of pulling events. In addition to the above, the Ohio Truck and Tractor Pullers Association and the United Pullers of Iowa represent the interests of competitors in their respective states in the election of officers and other business conducted each September at the NTPA's annual meeting.

First picture of the new The Razors Edge light mod

This week on Thursday evening, The Razors Edge Pulling Team around Herman Staal from the Netherlands have revealed the first picture of their new 5500lbs/2.5t light modified machine for the future. After the sell of their old tube chassis to Scotland last year, the Dutch team from Voorthuizen have built a new lighter steel wedge chassis with a newly built rearend. Also, Herman has already purchased a set of new uncut Mitas 30.5-32 Powerpull tires on new polished aluminum rims. The Voorthuizen based team currently working on further parts for the new chassis, like the new fenders and the newly developed driveline. But it is still a lot of work to do on the new chassis and the driveline before the tractor will hit the pulling track for the first time.
The first run for the new inline 6 cylinder Iveco Cursor alky burner powered light mod is planned for 2021 in the Netherlands. But that depends on the covid 19 situation and the rules by the government at the moment.
Further information and pics about the new light mod tractor will follow in the next months, check here at pullingworld.com!

Great News from the Bear Essentials Pulling Team in Great Britain

After more than a 1 year's absence, the Bear Essentials Pulling Team from Shrewsbury, in Great Britain have announced on their Facebook fan page that they will return on the pulling tracks with their Valtra pro stock tractor called ''Ice Bear'' again in 2022. That's definitely great news for the Ice Bear fans and for the pulling sport in Great Britain!

The statement from the Bear Essentials Pulling Team:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ✨
We are very pleased to announce that after many months, and without having to go through full legal proceedings, that the team tractor known as Ice Bear has been returned to the team.
The original team structure has now been terminated with a settlement agreed plus a deed of separation signed officially removing Mike Simmons from any future involvement with The Bear Essentials Team or entitlement to the tractor formerly known as Ice Bear.
The remaining team members Andy Miller, Jane Miller, Brian Marston and Peter Hemming will continue as The Bear Essentials Team.  Also not forgetting May Norris who continues to help with the social media for the team.
The intention was initially to run the tractor again in 2021, assuming the Covid restrictions will allow, but unfortunately the condition in which the tractor was returned will not allow this for now.  It has been stored outside for the last 15 months, which means we first have quite a few workshop hours to bring her back to life again, so we plan to be back on the track for the 2022 season.
We are very thankful to the support given to the team during this period of turmoil from our sponsors, fellow competitors, the tractor pulling ‘family’ and of course our loyal fans. We look forward to joining you all once more on the track in the near future.
We will post updates on Facebook and Instagram as normal and look forward to being back at events next year.
For any other questions relating to this announcement please contact us through messenger or using the below details.

New Ford Limited Super Stock from Switzerland

Thomas Schönmann from Niederbipp in Switzerland has built a brand new alcohol fired Ford Commander 6000 limited super stock tractor called “The Sonic” on component base. At the end of last month, after almost 2 years of development and building the new tractor was finally ready for the first roll out in front of his workshop.
But first, we are looking back how everything started with him in the tractor pulling sport. Thomas Schönmann started with the sport in 2012 at the age of 19. At the building of his first tractor, he was 16 years old, a 500kg modified garden puller with a 4 cylinder motorcycle engine. He competed with the 500kg modified in the Swiss Championship only for 2 years and stopped at the end of 2014 with the garden pulling sport.
Whereby his girlfriend drove the modified garden puller for another 2 years until the end of 2016. After his garden pulling experience, he started to build a new IH 844 tractor for the very popular 2.5t/5500lbs sport class in Switzerland. With the IH 844 tractor, Thomas competed in the 2014 Swiss Championship, to get his first experience in the sport class.
In 2015, Thomas switched the tractor and the brand. He switched to a blue tractor, an Ford 5000 with a 4 cylinder Ford Powerstar engine, which was built in 4 months with the help and support of Patrick Krähenbühl and Reto Meier. Thomas competed with the Ford 5000 until 2016. During the winter of 2016/2017, the little Ford received a lot of changes and much more power compared to the season before. The Ford tractor was completely new rebuilt and got a new Ford 7000 hood.
With the bigger hood, there also was more space for a bigger power plant. The small 4 cylinder engine was replaced by a more powerful turbocharged 6 cylinder Ford BSD666 power plant with a capacity of 6.6l on Diesel fuel. But that was not all, the tractor was renamed into ''Idefix Evolution''. He debuted with the rebuilt Ford at the first round of the 2017 Swiss Championship.
After all those changes and the bigger power plant, the tractor was now competitive and he also won his first events during the season. Better was the year of 2018, In that season he really started to harvest the fruits of his hard work during the last years and also won at the end of the year his first and now only Swiss Championship title in the 2.5t/5500lbs sport class.
During the 2018 season came the considerations to built a new tractor for a bigger class. So he sold his ''Idefix Evolution'' tractor to a new owner in Switzerland. The new owner is still competing with the Ford 7000 successful in the Swiss Championship of the 2.5t/5500lbs sport class. After Thomas had sold his old tractor, he started with the planning and parts sourcing for the new project.
He always wanted to build something bigger and he had been thought for a long time and when it became clear that the limited super stock class was introduced in the ETPC regulations, he definitely wanted to build a new tractor for this new class on alcohol base.

Before Thomas started to build the new machine he had to decide on which base he wanted to build the new limited super stock. For that, he had two possibilities a limited super stock with a modified stock rearend and gearbox or a component tractor with a much lighter modified truck planetaries rearend and a small lighter gearbox/reverser. In the beginning, he didn't want to build the limited super stock on component base and actually already had a donor vehicle a Ford 9700 but after long considerations, Thomas decided to build on component base anyway. He saw advantages on the component base that he can make a better weight distribution and can keep the center of gravity low and he possibly still has the potential for improvement for the future.
The new The Sonic got a completely new homemade steel tube frame with a newly built homemade steel 2 bar roll cage, homemade steel wheelie bars, a JGES Racing aluminum racing driver seat with a 4 point safety harness, a newly developed front axle with a air ride front axle suspension, new front wheels with aluminum rims, a homemade hydraulic steering from a boat and a machined Rockwell SQHD steel semi truck rearend with a newly built hitch and drawbar.
The machined Rockwell steel rearend is shortened and comes out of the former single Rolls Royce Griffon V12 powered 2.5t/5500lbs light mod tractor called ''The Rebel'' from the Netherlands. Thomas purchased for his component project the old The Rebel chassis from Jesper Madsen in Denmark and cut the rearend out of the old tube chassis from the light modified ride.
But before he welded the old Rockwell rearend into the tube chassis, Thomas optimized the rearend a little bit and welded new brackets for the drawbar on the housing.
The Rockwell rearend got a stock steel Rockwell SQHD center section with an optimized Rockwell SQHD differential, a Rockwell stock ring and pinion gear, custom built steel half shafts and machined MAN steel planetary carrier housing with stock MAN planetaries. To keep the tractor between the white lines, the Ford also got a homemade single wheel brake system with billet aluminum calipers and laser cut brake discs. After all those changes on the former light mod rearend, he should have a reliable and good working rear axle in the limited super stock.
For a good grip on the pulling tracks in Europe, Thomas purchased a set of used polished aluminum Midwest rims with brand new uncut 24.5x32 Firestone Puller 2000HP tires. The Midwest aluminum rims were bought from the Dschinni Pulling Team in Albersloh, Germany. The rims were mounted on the Deutz Allis component super stock called ''Dschinni Evolution'' in the past.
Also completely new constructed is the driveline in the machine. He put into the chassis a new aluminum SCS reverser with a custom built steel driveshaft between the clutch and the reverser, a 11inch crower centrifugal clutch with 4 discs and a homemade steel clutch bell housing.
The hood and the fenders of the limited super stock are really old school. First, he wanted to use for his project an old Ford 9700 sheet metal hood, but then he decided to use a much older hood compared to the old 9700. The decision was made on a Ford Commander 6000 hood from the 60s. The original row crop tractor for the fields was mainly built for the US market between 1965 and 1967 in the Ford tractor factory in Highland Park, Michigan in the USA. It was a 2WD tractor without a driver's cab and had a Ford Select-O-Speed full powershift transmission with 10 forward and 2 reverse gears.
The most interesting stuff about that tractor are the different available engines for this tractor. The 6 cylinder power plant was in 3 different versions available. The version with 4l capacity ran on diesel fuel and the 3.7l version ran on gasoline or LP-gas. The engine produced a maximum power of 65hp in all those 3 different versions. But the original Commander hood was too small and not wide enough for the new pulling tractor project, due to the too big engine and the rest all around. So the only possibility was to build a replica of the original Ford Commander 6000 hood. The hood is completely homemade.
First, he started to build a complete hood out off wood and then he polyesterized a negative hood. After the negative hood was ready then the right hood was polyesterized. He had a lot of help from his colleague Florian Wälti, who was familiar with polyester work. The radiator grilles on the hood are homemade too. Overall, the replica of the hood took more than 3 months of work. For checks on the engine or on the clutch, the hood can easily electrical opened to the front. It's currently not the only pulling tractor in the world which has a Ford Commander hood on the chassis. A further one is the 6200lbs component light super stock machine called ''Commander'' of Jason Hootman from Corfu, New York in the USA.
The whole paint job on the hood and the rest of the tractor were also done by Florian Wälti. The nicest thing on the tractor is the airbrush paint job on the hood with the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' on it. Sonic the Hedgehog is a computer game series of the Japanese publisher Sega. The game existed since 1991 of the same name and Sega has been continuously bringing out new offshoots for all video game systems ever since. The only thing which is original of a Ford Commander 6000 are the sheet metal fenders.
The new Swiss Ford component limited super stock of Thomas Schönmann is powered by a newly built up turbocharged 6 cylinder Ford Powerstar engine with a displacement of 8.3l on alcohol fuel.
The basic parts for the engine were purchased from Edward Beukeveld, owner and driver of the Ford-New Holland Limited super stock called ''Snoopy'' from the Netherlands. But all adjustments and the assembly of the newly built Ford engine were done by Thomas himself in his workshop in Niederbipp.
The Powerstar engine has a bored up Ford Powerstar cast iron block with billet steel Darton sleeves, a new billet steel crankshaft with new CNC-milled rods made of SSAB Toolox steel and billet modified aluminum pistons, a newly modified and flowed Ford Powerstar stock cylinder head, new better and bigger valves and valve springs, a custom built camshaft, a homemade stainless steel exhaust and steel intake manifold, a billet Holset HX82 turbocharger with a bigger intake impeller wheel, an aluminum air intake funnel, a homemade stainless steel oil pan, an Aviaid oil pump, a homemade stainless steel fuel tank, a Veldhuizen Special Products (VSP) alcohol fuel injection system with a Waterman fuel pump and an RPM data logger.
The cylinder head for the engine was purchased from the Silver Bullet Pulling Team from Houten in the Netherlands. The head was modified to alcohol by Martin and Justin van Echtelt and later flowed by Thomas Mathmann of the Dschinni Pulling Team. Due to the many contacts with Thomas Mathmann and the friendship that resulted, he invited Thomas Schönmann to a ''flow weekend'' into his workshop in Albersloh, Germany, where they then machined his pistons for the engine and then measured the cylinder head on his flow bench. They were still able to get a lot out of it with processing as far as the flow was concerned. That made both very happy after measuring the reworked channels.
After that, Thomas took many new impressions home with him, where he then worked on the remaining channels.
The power of the Ford powerplant under the Commander hood is unknown and Thomas does not want to give any information because he has never stood in front of the sled with his Ford Commander. But from experience from other teams, 2000hp should be possible.
The plans for the coming years are quite clear. Thomas Schönmann hopes the newly built tractor will not flies around his ears at the first pull and that he can collect experience, which is very important for the later future. He has planned currently to compete with his new The Sonic at pulling events in Germany and the Netherlands, which those tractors already drive for years to gather more experience.
Switzerland has currently no championship for this class and nobody has experience with these limited super stock machines because the Ford Commander is the first built limited super stock in Switzerland. What was important for him: Right from the start Thomas Schönmann wanted to build everything that was possible completely himself because that's basically what the hobby is all about. The tractor was built without sponsors.
Thomas also would like to thank Thomas Mathmann of the Dschinni Pulling Team, Willem Veldhuizen of Veldhuizen Special Products and Florian Wälti for their help during the building of this new Ford Commander limited super stock!

New 600kg Modified in Germany

From Telgte, in Germany, the Tiger Duck Pulling Team around Phillip Schilling have built with Dennis Dülger a completely new 600kg modified garden puller tractor with a 4 cylinder automotive power plant. After 2 1/2 years time of developing and building, Phillip Schilling, together with his dad and Dennis Dülger finally got the tractor ready to run this winter.
The Tiger Duck Team has a long history in the German garden pulling scene. Founded in 1999, the team started with a 10hp Briggs & Stratton powered Gutbrod in the 350kg stock class in the German Championship. Phillip's dad built this tractor for him (Phillip was at the time 8 years old) and the garden puller was named ''Tiger Duck 1'' like the popular German figure ''Tigerente'' (in english Tiger Duck) by the draftsman and artist Horst Eckert alias Janosch. Usually, the maiden run of Tiger Duck 1 was planned for their home pull in Füchtorf 1999. Unfortunately, a broken gearbox in the pits made that plan not possible. But the young Phillip at that time got the chance to drive the 500kg John Deere stock tractor called ''Green Magic'' of the Kilian Family on that weekend and he did a nice job in front of the sled for the first time.
After the broken gearbox was repaired, he did his maiden run on Tiger Duck 1 in Haltern am See at the end of the German Championship season. But those gremlins with the gearbox should be the main issue on the tractor for the next seasons. In June 2003, they sold Tiger Duck 1 to Detlef Meppen from Nordrhein Westfalen. During the 2000 season, they decided to build a second new tractor with a bigger engine, better tires and a reliable gearbox. Tiger Duck 2 was named the tractor. It was a Case garden tractor with an 11hp Kohler engine and debuted at the 2000 German Championship finals in Erkelenz-Holzweiler. That maiden voyage was very successful for the team. Phillip finished in a great 3rd place with the new tractor. That great result gave hope for the upcoming season.
The 2001 season with the new Tiger Duck 2 was pretty good, 3 podiums and a win at the round in Krumbach-Breitenthal brought them the 3rd place in the German Championship point standings, which was a great success for the 10 year old bloke. 2002 was a season maybe with good results but also some bad ones. That year, the Schillings competed for the first time the whole season with both tractors (Tiger Duck 1 and Tiger Duck 2) in the German Championship. Surprisingly they had the better results that year with the old Tiger Duck 1, with 4 podium finishes in opposite to Tiger Duck 2 with 2 runner up places. Another surprise in that season was, Phillip finished with Tiger Duck 1 in 4th in the German Championship, a place ahead of his Tiger Duck 2.
The real breakthrough in the 350kg stock class for him was in 2003. For that season his dad purchased a set of new rims with new special garden puller tires for the Case, which brought the tractor more traction on the pulling tracks. And it was one of the best investments for the team, the tractor ran now much better on the tracks and that was also to see on the results. With 6 podiums and 3 victories, Phillip finally won his first German Championship title in that class.
After the sale of Tiger Duck 1 in 2003, there came the plans to build a completely new machine for a different garden puller class. At that time, Philip was already 12 years old and there came the opportunity to step up into the next higher class.
So his dad decided to build a 500kg modified with a 1.3l Alfa Romeo car engine. The new modified tractor called ''Tiger Duck 3 '' debuted in May of 2004 in Steinhagen, Germany. But due to less time, the team decided to run only on 4 events that year, which meant Phillip couldn't defend his title in the 350kg stock class with Tiger Duck 2.
But a year later, they returned fully back with both tractors for the whole season. The 1.3l Alfa Romeo engine on Tiger Duck 3 was replaced by a Honda CBR 1000 motorcycle engine with more power and more rpm's. Tiger Duck 2, the 350kg Case stock tractor wasn't technically changed or improved and stayed the same as the year before. During the year, he had a battle with the 4 years younger Benjamin Carle (now the driver of the component super stock called Midnight Deere) with Cat Dog for the title. At the end of the season, both were equal in the German Championship point standings, but Phillip had more wins on his credit and won for the second and last time the German Championship title in the 350kg stock class. After the end of 2006, they sold Tiger Duck 2 to Hermann Kropp from Germany and the Case was renamed into Smoky Bear in 2007.
After the tractor was sold, the focus was fully now on Tiger Duck 3. After some great results between 2006 and 2009, Phillip achieved his maiden title in the 500kg modified class in 2010. In 2011, he couldn't defend his title, but he hit back in 2012 and won his 2nd German Championship title in this class. After 2012, the Honda CBR 1000 powerplant on Tiger Duck 3 was replaced by a Honda CBR 1100xx engine with more power. That brought more success in 2013. In that season he won his first and so far only European Championship crown in Bookholzberg, Germany. In 2015, Dennis Dülger came to the team as helper and replacement driver of the Tiger Duck 3. Together with him, Phillip won 3 further German Championship titles in a row from 2016-2018.
In 2018, his team member Dennis wanted to have his own Garden Puller tractor, but not a 500kg modified tractor like Tiger Duck 3. He wanted a tractor for the newly formed 600kg modified class in Germany. After some further talks, Philip and his dad decided to build a 600kg mod machine together with him.
The new 600kg modified machine got a homemade steel tube frame with a homemade 2bar steel cage, a homemade steering with a steering gear from a Smart car, a newly built front axle with homemade steering knuckle and Go Kart wheels, a lightweight Go-Kart racing driver seat with a 4 point harness, homemade steel tube wheelie bars and a Ford rearend with a newly built drawbar and hitch.
The rearend in the new machine is a Ford 8.8 rear axle with custom built half shafts by Roland van Dongen (driver of the 600kg compact diesel tractor called ''The Legend'') from the Netherlands. The rest of the rear axle like the center section, the diff and the ring and pinion gear are still original Ford parts. To keep the tractor in bounds, the rear axle got a homemade single wheel brake system with Kawasaki brake calipers and discs from a Honda CBR 1100xx motorcycle on each rear wheel. The rear wheels on the 600kg mod are a set of brand new cut Pioneer Giant Puller 31-15.5-15 tires on polished Real Wheel Racing aluminum rims. The new cut tires were bought from pullingtires.com in Denmark and the new rims from 600kg modified competitor Raphael Rehbach from Kaltenkirchen in Germany.
The new homemade fenders are made off aluminum sheet metal. The drivers and the engine position on the new tube chassis are more forward and the center of gravity is lower compared to the Tiger Duck 3 chassis. With this newly built chassis, the team hopes to have a good balance on the pulling tracks in the future.
Completely new developed and built too is the drivetrain. The drivetrain received a custom built gearbox, a custom built 30mm steel driveshaft with Duplex chains between the gearbox and the clutch, a 3 disc Tilton centrifugal clutch with a specially made flywheel and a homemade clutch bell housing. The new custom built gearbox has a CNC-milled aluminum housing with custom built gears and shafts. This brand new gearbox was built by Stefan Schwarz (Schwarz Frästechnik) of the Ghost Buster Pulling Team from Oberharmersbach in south Germany.
The new flywheel for the clutch was developed by the team himself and machined by Thomas Mathmann of the Dschinni Pulling Team from Everswinkel in Germany.
The new 600 kg mod machine is powered by a 4 cylinder 16V VW car engine with a displacement of 2.0l on petrol fuel. The powerplant has a stock VW engine block, an original crankshaft with Integrated Engineering H shaft rods and stock pistons, an original VW 16 valve cylinder head with new AVL Schrick valve springs and tappets, an original camshaft, a homemade steel exhaust manifold and a modified SAR Turbotechnik aluminum intake manifold, a Holset HX35 turbocharger with an Arlows air intake funnel, a homemade stainless steel fuel tank, an electrical AEM petrol fuel pump and an Ecumaster EMU Black data logger and engine control. With a laptop and the software on it, they can control the engine and they can change the setup on the engine after each pull.
It's definitely a very nice newly built and good looking tractor for this class in Germany and hopefully a very strong and nice running 600kg modified which brings more life for the class in the future. Dennis Dülger and Phillip Schilling have planned to compete with the new 600kg modified in the German Championship for the future.
